Personal locator services emerge

Article Abstract:

With the Global Positioning System in place, personal location services are under development. With these services, subscribers could locate mentally ill loved ones who have wandered, courts could constantly monitor parolees' positions, and a variety of other applications. A small device either carried by or attached to the clothing of a person emits a low wattage signal that is monitored by satellite. A subscriber who wants to locate that person would either call or electronically connect to a service provider who in turn would be connected to the locator service data center. The subscriber could provide a password and a user number for the person they are trying to locate, and the system would deliver their position.
