Police and district auditor to vet Bassetlaw report

Article Abstract:

A highly critical report on planning procedures used by Bassetlaw District Council has recommended that both the development committee and the current planning sub-committee be dissolved. This has already been undertaken by the council, which has made the new planning committee a full committee of the council. Planning officers are also to undertake an evaluation of the process of revoking or modifying two applications for housing detailed in the report. Police action may be taken in the light of the report's findings.

Cafe culture hits the streets

Article Abstract:

Sheffield City Council is encouraging restaurants to move tables and chairs out onto the pavements, although applications for such a move still need to be approved by a magistrate. The idea is being encouraged to boost the use of city streets, however, some magistrates believe that the move will open the way for other activities to obstruct the pavements. Nottingham and Leeds are also encouraging the al fresco move.
