Process activates carbon-hydrogen bonds

Article Abstract:

University of Buffalo (New York state) researchers have developed a technique for activating typically unreactive carbon-hydrogen bonds in organic molecules. Their innovative method may lead to the synthesis of a broad variety of new, complex, specialty chemicals, particularly pharmaceuticals, from inexpensive bulk chemicals. The method is also very promising for industrial applications because it generates catalytic reactions and allows for the manipulation of the resulting molecular structure.

Graphical method analyzes reactive distillation columns

Article Abstract:

Two researchers have developed a technique for gauging the manner by which reaction zones may be distributed within a binary reactive distillation column using modified forms of the Ponchon-Svarit and McCabe-Thiele methods. The technique is limited to binary mixtures but it may be extended in the future to ternary and quaternary systems. Reactive distillation integrates the reaction and separation processes rather than carrying each out separately, thus providing many advantages.

Process minimization: making plants safer

Article Abstract:

The elimination or minimization of hazards is a more desirable approach to designing safety into a chemical process rather than handling the hazards with engineering and management controls. Four key strategies for inherently safer process design include the minimization of the size of process equipment, substitution of a less-hazardous substance or process step, simplification of process and plant design and moderate storage or processing conditions.
