Quality a way of life in the Motor City

Article Abstract:

General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Motors Corp. successfully enhanced growth and recaptured market share from their Japanese competitors as a result of their strong commitment to quality control. During the 1980s, these companies initiated holistic quality inspection programs which emphasized the importance of overseeing quality during both the product development and production stages, rather than only after manufacturing. To achieve this, they strictly adhered to Deming's philosophy and utilized a wide range of quality-control tools and practices.
