Quality gets a boost from materials science

Article Abstract:

Materials-science research not only helps US manufacturers adopt new materials technology and turn out better-quality products, but also contributes to reducing production costs by combining processes. Among materials research efforts expected to influence product design and quality are those conducted at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory on a concurrent forming/bonding process, the Automotive Research Institute focus group on Bonding, Fastening and Joining at the Michigan State University, and an advanced bonding technology developed at University of Delaware's Center for Composite Materials and Dana Corp.'s Advanced Technology program.

Debates abound over whether the employment of new editions of ISO/QS-9000, AS-9000 and CE Marking is beneficial only to paid consultants and registrars or is only a wasteful exercise of labor-intensive distraction. The obvious advantage of complying with the standardization policy is that companies are rewarded with more customer recognition and fewer audits. Leading aircraft contractors and automobile manufacturers in the US are more concerned with the benefits that they can derive from the international standards.

Othy Inc. reduces finishing costs by 35%

Article Abstract:

Othy Inc., maker of orthopedic surgical instruments, has greatly improved the productivity of its manufacturing processes by using gaging instruments. After evaluation of the different processes through a surface-measurement system, the firm came up with a program of surface-finish specification and gaging which satisfies customer specifications at lower costs. Customers have always pushed for cost reduction and quality improvement.
