RTPI gives advice over EU metric directive confusion

Article Abstract:

The European Union has issued a directive which has caused concern among the planning profession in the UK since it is feared than documents using imperial measures may become invalid. The European Community adopted the Units of Measurement Directive in 1989 and member states are required to use metric measures in administration, the economy and other areas, but UK planning legislation has not been amended accordingly. New planning documents should use metric units though private sector documents could be outside the directive prior to Oct 1995.

A policy that could prove counter-productive: the Government has spelled out its intentions on town centres in the final version of PPG6. But it is not all good news

Article Abstract:

The government has unveiled its final version of the new PPG6 which calls for all traffic generating development to be concentrated in the town centre. However policies to help the town centres could prove to be unsustainable in the future. The sequential test is an important criteria against which new development is measured, but little advice is offered about whether the tests be applied in determining the availability and suitability of alternative sites.

Romania revisited

Article Abstract:

Romania has worked out new planning legislation which it has shared with West European town planners. Romania considers new land, environmental and town planning legislation as instrumental to its acceptance as a member of the European Union. The new laws involve national policies for infrastructure development, county plans, and urban plans for communes.
