Senate bill seeks to double R&D funds and set priorities

Article Abstract:

A Senate bill seeks to double government R and D financing between 2001 through 2012. Unlike similar bills proposing to double R and D spending, this legislation details guidelines to help optimize the return to society on federal investment. It includes a minimum funding threshold below which, according to its authors, long-term harm would be wreaked to the R and D infrastructure and economic strength of the US. The bill may also provide significant momentum for increasing R and D levels by elevating R and D in the budget debate.
