Robot surveyor is making plans

Article Abstract:

The European research programme Reconstruction using Scanned Laser and Video has developed a robot surveyor known as the Autonomous Environmental Sensor for Telepresence. This equipment was designed for surveying nuclear reactors, but could be sufficiently inexpensive to supply real world 3D representations of the inside of houses for estate agents offering Internet-based services. It has a sensing head located on the side of a tower on a mobile platform. This platform contains a host PC, 24 ultrasonic systems and a Motorola board running an Albatros operating system.

The problems of installing an industrial robot for the first time into your production line are discussed. Five guidelines are given: think simple, be thorough, be reasonable, be honest and be careful. The installation of the first robot must be carefully coordinated with existing machinery of practices or the robot will fail to produce and future plans may well be in jeopardy also.
