S-Curve discontinuities

Article Abstract:

S-Curve discontinuities are discussed relative to business survival and innovation. An S-curve indicates the shape of a graph showing the relationship of input and resulting output that looks like a stretched letter S. The x axis is labeled 'input,' usually in some unit such as time or resources, and the y axis is labeled 'output,' usually in some unit of performance, e.g., throughput, process yield or purity. The trailing ends are more important than the overall shape and often progress slows if there is not innovation. A leap in an S-curve will be accompanied by unpalatable realities related to innovation. Something is replaced by something. Lingering may feel better than leaping to a new S-curve, the initial slope of which is lower than the final slope of the old one.

A new big bang

An international conference on management innovation was held in 1991 through the joint efforts of the American Management Assn, Management Centre Europe and the Japan Management Assn. The conference made managers realize the value of exchanging ideas with their global counterparts in developing future market plans. Such a conference also reveals new insights into management innovation techniques.
