Science parks: intellectual talents create exports

Article Abstract:

There has been a substantial increase in the number of science parks and research centers throughout Asia, led by Japan and its Tsukuba Science City located 60 kilometers from Tokyo, and the Technopolis Project begun in 1983 outside Kyushu. The centers are modeled after the Route 128 area in Massachusetts, California's Silicon Valley and North Carolina's Research Triangle Park. The most important aspect of the Asian centers is their proximity to strong institutions of higher education, which provides a steady supply of well-trained graduates for entry-level jobs and academic partners for collaborative research projects. Among the centers described are Taiwan's Hsinchu Science-Based Industrial Park, South Korea's Daedok Science Town and the Singapore Science Park. How foreign operations are able to establish themselves in science parks is described.
