MBO - Is it Passe?

Article Abstract:

The historical development of management-by-objectives (MBO) is reviewed. A six page questionnaire was sent to 150 companies in California. The questions focused on whether or not the company used MBO as a management technique and gathering information on other human resource management programs used by the company. Results indicate that MBO is utilized by seventy-nine per cent of the companies, with incentive plans having the next highest program usage. Responses to statements in the questionnaire are given in tables as varying levels of agreement or disagreement. MBO is still the most widely used method of performance appraisal in the California companies surveyed.
