Small lots and SPC raise productivity 400%

Article Abstract:

Verilink Corp. vice president of operations Henry Tinker was tasked with the improvement of the telecommunication firm's productivity and return rate when he joined the company. He successfully implemented statistical process control and initiated a quality training program for employees which dramatically improved productivity. Notable gains included a 400% productivity improvement, increased first-pass yield rate of 98%, a reduciton of repair staff to 1.5, and higher employee morale.

Statistical process control (SPC) methods could be used to improve a company's process if used properly. SPC should be understood through continuous education and training, which will explain and guide its application for complex situations. SPC methods provide charts that could exhibit the behavior of a process according to the data obtained. A plateau will indicate that the current process has reached the highest level of its capacity.
