Smothering smoke sources

Article Abstract:

Restricting the movement of smoke became a major goal in building design when it was learned that smoke inhalation is responsible for most deaths and injuries during fires. Beginning in the late 1960s, the US building code has contained specific edicts on containing smoke. Research into the movement of smoke has unveiled five major factors responsible. These include stack effects, buoyancy, expansion, wind and the building's heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems.

Green building design = high performance building design

Article Abstract:

The growing trend of green building is becoming an important consideration for the construction industry, which is most essential in implementing sustainable design. Already, more government agencies are pushing for initiatives to support green building programs, including research and development efforts. Manufacturers and other businesses are also seeing the practicality of green building to avoid long-term cost, liability, health and possible market implications.

Plumbing design for and all

Article Abstract:

Plumbing engineers should extensively research the functions that may occur inside a specific building type before formal design begins on a project. Failure to do basic research may result in some flaws in the overall design which will not be apparent until heavy usage occurs within the facility. The design parameters in different types of facilities including airport terminals, stadiums and arenas, convention facilities, and theaters and cinemas, are discussed.
