Snap gages make quick OD measurements

Article Abstract:

A snap gage does not only make a good tool for measuring outside diameters, it can also be used for outside square dimensions. The device comes in a portable rigid C-shaped frame with a dial indicator and a reference surface. It also comes in varied sizes for measuring diameters of up to 48 inches. It is commonly called an anvil because of its two anvils; one of which acts as the reference surface, while the other acts as the moving and sensitive contact.

All in one: modular gages put flex in measuring

Article Abstract:

Modular gages are instruments designed to have the capability to measure a combination of dimensions such as diameter, height, center to center, taper and concentricity. The accuracy of modular gages are guaranteed by its repeatability, their flexibility to make contact with parts, and strength. These instruments, however, should be clean like any other instrument to ensure accuracy but do not provide the highest level of accuracy in the market.

Adjust for shrinkage in glass gages

Article Abstract:

Manufacturers should seriously consider the shrinkage of glass gages in their manufacturing activities and take precautions to calibrate these gages regularly. Glass gages that show a shrinkage of 20 micrometers per meter should be assessed in terms of its effect on product quality and should be calibrated regularly or replaced with fused silica or fused quartz depending on the precision requirements of the manufacturing process.
