Standards battles heat up between United States and European Union

Article Abstract:

The US and the European Union are both seeking to play a leading role in international standardization. Both sides are strongly aware that controlling standards and related practices brings control of markets. European Union officials are very committed to defending the 1991 Vienna Agreement, under which the International Standards Organization reviews all draft European Union standards, taking over those intended for international development that are redundant with European Union initiatives. US officials feel that this agreement creates barriers for proposed standards from other countries.

Uncertain future for management system standards

Article Abstract:

Occupational health and safety (OHS) management system standards face an uncertain future. The International Organization for Standardization's (ISO) Technical Management Board recommends the postponement of the development of such standards due to weak support from major stakeholders, including many ISO member countries and influential industry associations. The adoption of an OHS standard is also proving to be an unpopular idea.
