Strength in fibres: what you need to know

Article Abstract:

Fibre reinforcement technology plays a large role in choice of thermoplastic polymers in design, as it improves some thermal and mechanical properties. Reinforcement with glass-fibre enahnces mechanical strength, and stiffness. Good adhesion between matrix and fibre is important in good service properties for injection moulding compounds. Carbon fibres improve mechanical properties more than glass fibres. The effect of fibre reinforcement on different polymers is also discussed.

New PLC drives machine safety

Article Abstract:

The new Pitronik PSS3000 programmable safety controller developed by Pilz links both machine control and safety functions. It will allow designers to apply the power and flexibility of programmable logic controller (PLC) technology to safety features. Applications will include safety critical machinery such as mining machinery and cable cars.

Carbon matrix lifts gear performance

Article Abstract:

Balzers of Lichtenstein has developed a new tribological coating for gears and other precision components. The coating is applied by reactive sputtering to a thickness of a few microns. The coating consists of an amorphous carbon matrix containing tungsten carbide. It has a friction coefficent of 0.1-0.2 and a hardness of 1,000 HV.
