Success factors in manufacturing

Article Abstract:

Global competition in the manufacturing sector can be fostered by using a system that integrates the planning phase with production and delivery. This was the conclusion of a survey on the international markets of the US and Japanese manufacturing industry. The survey also indicated that the Japanese benefited from their ability to pinpoint the weaknesses of their American counterparts. The Japanese manufacturers can immediately implement volume changes, modify production schemes and adapt to product changes.

ISO studying reference temperature change

Article Abstract:

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is evaluating a plan to transform the standard reference temperature for dimensional metrology from 20 degrees centigrade to 23 degrees centigrade. Although the proposed change will not affect the definition of length and determination of meter, it will affect the dimension of physical objects which react with thermal expansion. The change in reference temperature will adversely affect the US manufacturing sector as it will make most equipment outmoded.

SOI: no block to CMM software innovation

Article Abstract:

The emergence of the North American standard operator interface (SOI) at first seemed a threat to coordinate measuring machine (CMM) software developers. However, SOI has proven to be a facilitating program whichintegrates existing CMM software since it is based on the standardized symbols set by Computer Aided Manufacturing-International. SOI eliminates the need for training and retraining as floor-shop users encounter newer and updated software brands.
