Technology '84: Aerospace and Military

Article Abstract:

Major achievements in aerospace and military projects outnumbered project setbacks. Successes in manned flight included the space shuttle Challenger flights, European Spacelab orbits, and Soviet Soyuz T-9 space station rendezvous. NASA positioned the first Tracking and Delay Satellite as part of an effort to eliminate the ground-station network. The first infrared mapping of the sky was completed by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS). Successful tests of the United States MX missile and missile- destroying high-energy laser were completed. Another United States Air Force project, Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (Lantirn), which will decrease a pilot's work load, began flight tests. Infrared photographs, satellites, and MX guidance system are illustrated.

Robert A. Bell on Power and Energy: Uncertainties and Perceptions of Risk Hold Back Energy Technology Exploitation

Article Abstract:

Energy research is under way in fuel cells, fluidized-bed coal combustion, magnetohyrdrodynamics, nuclear fusion, and photovoltaics. Energy policies and development in the United States suffer from ambiguity, paradox, and public perception of environmental risk. Uncertainty also acts as an inhibitor to energy-technology exploitation.
