Temperature and gage R&R

Article Abstract:

Gage reliability can be enhanced with the use of gage on-line compensation or retrofitting temperature compensation systems on existing gages. Temperature effects on precision dimensional measurements could prove costly for manufacturers. Parts and gages must be allowed to stabilize before measuring to avoid erroneously manufactured items. High-precision measurements get affected by minute thermal variations, which could change dimensions that take up a sizable amount of total tolerance. Likewise, gages change temperature and could be a possible cause of error.

Eliminate thermal variations to improve Cpk

Article Abstract:

Thermal variation problems must be eliminated from precision machining processes to improve Cpk, an index that measures process ability to remain within standard range. The automatic electronic temperature compensation method is one approach to eliminating such variations. The method assumes that temperature data, data collection systems and the machine or workpiece must all be accurate to ensure proper and complete elimination of variation problems.

Automatic temperature compensating gages

Article Abstract:

Gages that automatically compensate for temperature variations offer manufacturers a better chance at reducing problems related to industrial measurement error. Aside from providing fast and accurate measurement, the sensors found in automatic temperature compensating gages can be used in dimension prediction and can be interfaced with other quality control devices and multigaging systems.
