The Heart of Integration: a Sound Data Base

Article Abstract:

Integration of design and manufacturing processes is aided by the use of a comprehensive data base consisting of product data all the way from preliminary design to customer support. A large and complex data base is the Boeing Commercial Airplane Co's CAD-CAM integrated information network (CIIN) used for the Boeing 757 and 767 jet productions. A diagram illustrates the CAD-CAM hardware, translators, and neutral data base that make up the system. Automated systems designers must choose between data administration and data-base administration as well as between a homogeneous and heterogeneous environment. Future systems must consider system security, computer breakdown precautions, data independence, and storage capacity. A table examines data administration versus data-base administration.

Collecting Data in 3-D

Article Abstract:

A mechanical arm with a Z80 microprocessor can take measurements in three-dimensional space. The Perceptor arm converts analog signals from each of the joints of the arm and then retraces its movements inside a computer graphics system. Applications for the arm include tracing the outline of a three-dimensional object or recording the distribution of temperature, electric-field strength, or acoustics.

Securing Data Banks

Article Abstract:

It is difficult to protect the security and confidentiality of data bases within a corporation or Government Agency. Encoding of data to obscure names, addresses, and other individual information can be overcome by phrasing inquiries so that statistical properties yield individual information. Refusing to answer certain queries and adding "noise" to the data can safeguard the individual.
