The Teams and the Players: European Common Market

Article Abstract:

The European Strategic Program on Research in Information Technology (Esprit) was formed by the Commission of the European Communities to permit the European information-technology industries to compete with the rest of the world. Research will be in software engineering, office automation, computer-integrated manufacturing, and an emphasis in advanced microelectronics, and information processing. The program encourages work across country boundaries to update European industry's research and development facilities.

Article Abstract:

Major research and development programs in information technology are underway in Japan, the United States, and Europe. The Japanese are working on a fifth generation computer system. Maintaining world leadership in computer technology is the United States' concern. Europe's goal is to build a strong technological base to rebuild economies. All projects are a cooperative effort of government, industry and universities.
