The great battery search

Article Abstract:

Batteries being developed to power electric vehicles (EVs) are improving, but they are still not better enough to replace gasoline. A number of battery systems for EVs have been developed, or are still being improved, including lead-acid batteries, nickel-metal hydride, lithium-based batteries, sodium-nickel chloride and others. But batteries remain the main stumbling block preventing EVs from going mainstream. The reason is because automakers have yet to develop the battery technology that optimizes performance, life and costs, as well as offering ample safety and less effect on the environment.

EEs' tools & toys

Article Abstract:

Tektronix designed the proprietary DPX waveform imaging processor specifically for obtaining and handling the three dimensions of waveform information of a DPO. Set in 0.65-micrometer CMOS, the highly pipelined processor is intended for high-speed image acquisition and memory management. To guarantee maximum throughput, it has distributed internal control and functions independently of the other processors in the scope. The DPX processor uses a full 21 bits of gradation information in the digital phosphor's array. The data is then compressed and shown as 16 levels of intensity grading.

The How and Why of the Electronic Noses

Article Abstract:

This lengthy article begins with a discussion of the biological nose, with a side-bar with defined terms. The article discusses the function of a gas liquid chromatograph with associated diagrams. Shortcomings in current technology are also mentioned, such as the relative difficulty in gaining real time results, and working in the field. Other sensors are also discussed at some length, being: conductivity sensors; quartz crystal microbalance sensors; surface acoustic-wave device; MOSFET; and odorant optical-fiber sensor.
