Article Abstract:

The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, Liverpool, UK, entertainment education centre, is the brainchild of Paul McCartney, former Beatle, and is based on the site of the grammar school which he used to attend. Some 15 million pounds sterling of public and private money has been invested in the project to revamp the grade II listed building, inaugurated in 1825. Security in the building is controlled by the use of smart cards which only allow access to certain rooms. Electrical work involved a lot of lighting and the installation of much datacommunication wiring.

A one-day seminar on procurement of building services was held in London, United Kingdom, with speakers coming from all sectors of the building industry. One speaker from the Rover Group explained how the company's building requirements are managed. A quantity surveyor said that RICS has been looking at m&e procurement, while a specialist contracter called for greater co-operation between contractors and consultants. A specialist subcontractor criticised clients for not being specific about what they want because this results in poor specifications being prepared.
