The case for a Technology Management Institute

Article Abstract:

The development of a Technology Management Institute (TMI) is envisioned as the solution to the inequity between engineering and management. Through a TMI, information on managerial techniques and new technology can be developed and disseminated to civil engineers, towards the goal of integrating the two seemingly disparate sides of civil engineering practice. A TMI is seen to systematically integrate business, communication, quality, teamwork and technology in the engineering profession.

Leveraging management skills to serve the community

Civil engineers are encouraged to offer their engineering management skills to business, professional and community groups and associations. They are urged to volunteer their time and concepts to improve their nontechnical and communications skills, and enlarge their business and social networks. Moreover, civil engineers are asked to maximize the use of various resources in their volunteer efforts, including books, conference proceedings and computer software.
