Unhooking medicine

Article Abstract:

The FCC allocated 14 MHz for Wireless medical Telemetry Service (WMTS) in summer 2000, but not everyone is pleased. For one thing, medical device companies, such as Agilent Technologies, GE, Siemens and SpaceLabs Medical, are being forced to develop fixes for existing products and new technologies for the next generation of wireless telemetry. For another thing, hospitals will have to adapt to what is, in effect, an accelerated replacement cycle.

Fiber optics without fiber: beaming light through the air offers the speed of optics without the expense of fiber

Article Abstract:

Free-space optics (FSO), also known as fiber-free optical communication, offers an economical way to transmit full-duplex data at gigabit-per-second rates over distances of a few city blocks to a few kilometers. FSO systems cost about a fifth as much as comparable ground-based fiber-optics arrangements, and installing an FSO system is relatively simple and fast.
