The integration game

Article Abstract:

Taylor Woodrow has undertaken a research project into the development of a fully integrated building control system which would control all the functions of a building and its security. The project has brought together personnel from all types of building equipment companies. They have set up an 250 sq metre building where they have developed a network of microchips which are integrated into articles used for the operational functions of the building. The micro-chips network, named LonWorks, can be operated through a computer software package.

Web feat

Article Abstract:

A method of sending digital information via electricty mains has been developed by Norweb Communications and Northern Telecom (Nortel). The system can be used to link directly with the Internet, which reduces telephone bills and cuts down on connecting time. The system has proved to be 20 times faster than transmitting by modem or telephone lines. Norweb and Nortel are running a trial system involving a primary school in Manchester, England. The results have shown less connecting time and faster delivery of information and downloading.

Don't let's fight..

Article Abstract:

Legal experts in the UK construction industry have taken part in a scripted adjudication case to highlight the benefits of taking disputed cases through the mediation route, rather than the more expensive route of arbitration. Adjudication is considerably cheaper than arbitration, while cases are also guaranteed to be resolved within a 28 day period. The mock case clearly highlighted the benefits of the scheme which has been introduced by the government under the Construction Act 1996.
