The specialties

Article Abstract:

Engineering education, multimedia and magnetic technologies are highlights of technology in 1993. Major changes are called for by influential persons in undergraduate engineering education. Academia should match programs to broader educational goals rather than traditional courses and disciplines. Focus may change from course content to the development of young people as emerging professionals and to enlarging undergraduate engineering programs to include a more inclusive curriculum of political, social and environmental education as well as studies in engineering. Communication vehicles and techniques now on the market are in need of a discipline that delineates how to best use and control them. Ongoing research in near-field optics, holographic storage or spectral hole-burning may produce improvements in magneto-optical storage devices in the future.

Main event: spectrum auctions

Article Abstract:

The FCC is breaking with tradition by granting personal communications service (PCS) licenses to bidders with the most available financial capital. This practice, which is being fueled by the high cost of PCS spectrum, is likely to lead to the downfall of telecommunications firms with limited capital. It is also expected to raise the level of competition in the PCS market.
