The tale of a paper sail

Article Abstract:

A project entitled Energy Challenge 2001 and revolving around the theme of energy efficiency was undertaken in 9/00 by six Miami University (Oxford, OH), students and ultimately they had the third place team. The students learned about paper technology and mechanical pulping with help from a commercial sponsor, Andritz, Inc., and adhesives. They were to convert 100 lb of loblolly pine wood chips into a sail. All entrants, from five schools, were to design a nonwoven synthetic composite sail with a minimum 80% wood fiber and a maximum 20% synthetic material.

Paper and pulp clean up advances

Article Abstract:

A new process that uses heat-resistant microorganisms for treating waste air and water emissions from pulp and paper mills at temperatures up to 70 degrees C has been developed by chemical engineers at the University of Toronto's Pulp and Paper Centre. Grant Allen, associate director of the center, said the process can save companies time and money since industrial emissions are usually cooled before treatment through methods that use large amounts of energy. He added that there is also an environmental benefit since less energy is used.
