The Pride of France: A National Commitment

Article Abstract:

Although it has limited resources, France is dedicated to involvement in space. Their objective is to orbit spacecraft such as geostationary satellites and earth-observation satellites launched by their own launchers. France and other European countries have cooperated with the United States on various projects but have difficulty coordinating efforts within their own countries like the United States.

DOE contracted Applied Management Sciences Inc. to find that U.S. active-solar purchases rose 37% in 1981 with $598,000,000 spent (17% in 1980; $437,000,000). Pool heating fell while water and space heating rose. Single-family sector bought 95% of installations, 87% of gross sales.

Recent Ph.D. graduates are more likely than older Ph.D.s to be employed in business or industry, to work outside their Ph.D. specialty and to pursue post- graduate study. Ph.Ds in engineering, mathematics and the physical sciences had the greatest shift away from academia.
