Travel time models in automated storage/retrieval systems: a critical view

Article Abstract:

Travel time models are used to identify the basic problems associated with the design and operational aspect of automated storage/retrieval systems (AS/RSs) used in materials handling. The systems are analyzed based on several manufacturing and technical parameters, such as the size of the storage bins, the sequencing concept used and the company's storage policies. Results indicate that there is a dire need for more research to develop AS/RSs capable of responding to the requirements of modern manufacturing systems.

Manufacturing setup cost reduction under variable lead times and finite opportunities for investment

Article Abstract:

An economic manufacturing quantity inventory model with finite variable lead times has been developed to analyze the cost reduction function of manufacturing systems. Through the use of logarithmic relationships, the model provides numerical parameters in determining the most cost-effective investment opportunity. Moreover, it has been established that there are only finite numbers of opportunities that exist for setup cost reduction investments.

An order-level lot size inventory model with inventory-level dependent demand and deterioration

Article Abstract:

An inventory model is derived for the lot-size order-level system with finite production rate and inventory-level dependent demand and deterioration. Since the model factored in flexibility of varying demand, it can solve all combinations of deterioration or no deterioration and varying or constant demands. The model also closely represents real-life situations as it assumed a decrease in demand with the deterioration rate.
