Computer Simulation in Flood Forecasting

Article Abstract:

Dr. Howard Chang from San Diego State University has developed a river model called FLUVIAL. Unlike conventional models, FLUVIAL does not assume a fixed riverbed. It can therefore be used on alluvial and ephemeral rivers. Based on several river dynamics principles, FLUVIAL incorporates water routing, sediment routing, and stream width and profile. FLUVIAL has demonstrated its accuracy by reconstructing a 1980 flood on the San Dieguito River. Civil engineer Tim Graves has used the model in commercial bridge construction applications and feels river modeling will be used increasingly in such applications. Photographs of the San Dieguito flood and a scoured river bank are included.

How Much Simulation Is Really Needed in Maritime Training?

Article Abstract:

Because the Coast Guard's manning of vessels has been reduced, there has been a similar reduction of on-board training of mariners. The Coast Guard believes that simulation training can give comparable experience to on-board training. The question then arises as to how much simulation is needed in maritime training. The Coast Guard is exploring this question.
