Article Abstract:

The Expert Group on the Urban Environment (EGUE) has been established by the European Union to develop a sustainable development agenda for urban areas. Urban environment experts from 15 member countries are examining the principles of sustainable development, taking into account environmental and socio-economic factors. EGUE seeks to develop a framework that allows innovative approaches to sustainability. Reports on sustainable cities are due to be published by the group by end-1995.

European planning sans frontieres

Article Abstract:

The European Union (EU) has begun a debate on planning in member states, though a European planning system has yet to emerge. The debate includes issues such as sustainability, aiding peripheral regions and small and medium cities, and aid for inner city areas. Some member states have a strong planning policy, and these include Denmark. Such systems can easily be integrated with an international planning policy for Europe as a whole.

Balancing acts on the continental shelf

Article Abstract:

The European Union (EU) and European trends are affecting planning in the UK. EU directives affecting UK planning include the directive on environmental assessment. Planning is needed in Europe since unfettered market forces would lead to regional inequality and damage to the environment. UK planners are able to influence European policies by becoming more involved as planning policies are still being developed in Europe.
