Viewpoint: are you ready for the science of industrial ecology?

Article Abstract:

The electronics industry should establish itself as an environmental leader by using industrial ecology concepts to actively pursue sustainable development. Such concepts study the links between human economic activity and natural systems, providing an insight on the effect of social and economic behavior on the environment. However, their implementation also requires new technologies that will replace less appropriate raw materials and energy.

Viewpoint: count the value of R&D, not just its cost

Article Abstract:

The federal government and the electric utility industry should be very careful in their effort to reduce the number of R&D programs to meet certain budgetary limits. Most of these programs, although very costly, have the potential to improve the country's economic and technological position. They also offer a high rate of return which would benefit society broadly and raise the people's standard of living.
