'Waltzing' jig dramatically improves yield in the gravity separation of fines

Article Abstract:

Altair International has launched a centrifugal jig which can filter fine particles measuring 500 mesh or 25 micrometers. The new fine-particle filtering device has a cylindrical casing and features a tire-formed horizontal metal chamber with a screened inner aperture. The deviceEs middle part has a metal disc connected to a hollow and vertical column. It is powered by an electric motor placed on top of the vertical and hollow column that runs at a speed of 200 rpm. Altair touts that the new device also has an 85% recovery rate of 30-325-mesh coal, based on conducted tests utilizing a 4-ton-per-year scale-up product.

Bacillus takes the heat in sludge treatment

Article Abstract:

Shinko Pantec Co., based in Kobe, Japan, has introduced a new activated sludge process, that practically cuts residual sludge to zero. Susumu Hasegawa, a senior researcher with the firm, said the traditional practice, which uses an aerated vessel to biologically decompose organic material in wastewater, leaves residual sludge. To achieve the zero level, Shinko Pantec uses a heat-resistant bacillus, where sludge could be soluble at 65 degree Centigrade, which is enough to produce the amylase and protease enzymes. The sludge, that has become soluble returns to the aeration vessel, where decomposition takes place.

Oxygen use cuts VOC levels during wastewater treatment

Article Abstract:

Praxair Inc. tested its In-Situ Oxygenator (I-SO), an oxygen-injection system, to hasten the destruction of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during wastewater treatment. Accelerating the speed of VOC destruction provides savings in both energy consumption and cost. Praxair tested I-SO side by side with an air diffuser. The test revealed that I-SO had an oxygen utilization rate of 92% against the 15% to 30% of the air diffuser. I-SO also outperformed the air diffuser in the amount of dissolved oxygen/hp-h.
