What is this process-capability stuff, anyway?

Article Abstract:

Process capability involves the improvement of manufacturing processes to meet pre-selected productivity goals. The proper application of the concept helps in the selection of equipment, materials, speeds and other variables which can affect product quality. This will result in less strain for the plant's quality department, less substandard products and less rework. Process capability complements a plant's 'do-it-right the first time' manufacturing goal.

Pareto diagrams get to the root of process problems

Article Abstract:

The Pareto diagram is a basic statistical-process control tool that quality assurance engineers use. This simple but powerful instrument is created by categorizing data, ranking them by frequency of occurrence and plotting them in a bar-chart form in descending order along the x axis. The data identify the most common problem and ascertain the leverage one can get from solving it. In addition, they can help determine the root cause of the problem.

Put "process" back in SPC

Article Abstract:

Quality auditors should evaluate statistical-process-control (SPC) systems based on their capacity to identify and exclude defective parts in the manufacturing process rather than merely detecting defective products. Techniques in building a sound SPC system include the identification of major process variables, determination of process capability and comparison with product demands.
