When is that QS-9000 deadline, anyway?

Article Abstract:

Only 10.9% of the entire motor vehicle parts industry, SIC category 3714, is registered to ISO/QS-9000. This low percentage raises many questions considering that the motor vehicle industry has set a 1997 deadline for all to register or risk not being chosen for possible new business. Other industries have done better, with printed-circuit-board makers having 14.7% and plastics and resins industry with 18.9%. The automotive stampings industry, which has a different SIC category, has 36.2% registered to the program.

Technology sharing helps manufacturers get up to inspection speed

Article Abstract:

Edison Industrial Systems Center's Advanced Imaging Group developed a video inspection system for Uretech International Inc., which had been experiencing a high product rejection rate. Uretech's manufacturing processes had difficulty in identifying which wheels needed to be painted a certain color. The video inspection system, which was composed of a personal computer, video cameras, frame grabbers and custom software, helped boost Uretech's product quality.
