Y2K testing: does success matter?

Article Abstract:

Companies and government agencies are rushing to ensure that their software passes Y2K tests, but errors could still creep in despite passing grades. The Securities Industry Assn proclaimed the investment center safe on the basis that six days of simulated trading had failed to 'break' the systems. Y2K problems must be fixed before any testing can begin, a herculean task involving examining every one of several million lines of code. The first requirement in determining if remediation has worked is a series of test cases. Unit testing checks whether each software module in an application has been fixed correctly. All these steps establish essential functionality; regression testing runs the application over time with multiple data sets to see if any failure occurs. Leading expert Ed Yourdon warns that the jubilation surrounding successful testing may distract people from work that is still necessary.
