A meta-analysis of the interspecific relationship between seed size and plant abundance within local communities

Article Abstract:

A meta-analysis technique was carried out to understand patterns of plant abundance by finding predictable relationships between life-history traits such as seed size and plant rarity to yield valuable information for the conservation and management of species. The result showed that seed size is indeed an important correlate of plant abundance, and thus a key determinant of plant community structure.

On the relationship between seed mass and species abundance in plant communities

Article Abstract:

Biomass or cover in plant communities were chosen as determining abundance because predictions from models of species coexistence and vegetation dynamics were being tested. When seed mass patterns are interpreted in terms of species coexistence models, the choice of abundance measure should be the same as the theoretical basis of those models.

Do seedlings in gaps interact? A field test of assumptions in ESS seed size models

Article Abstract:

ESS models for seed size evolution assume seedlings compete for vegetation gaps, eventually producing a single optimum seed size. This study supports the validity of the ESS model.
