Acidification-induced species shifts in coastal fisheries off the River Kyronjoki, Finland: a case study

Article Abstract:

Increasing acidification of Finland's rivers is contributing to negative changes in species communities. Water engineering projects and intensive land use have caused acidification of the River Kyronjoki and have eradicated spawning areas, decreasing local and coastal fishing stocks. This has altered the ecology of the fisheries, resulting in undesirable impacts on catch estimates and market statistics.

Anthropogenically-derived atmospheric nitrogen deposition, marine eutrophication and harmful algal bloom expansion: Is there a link?

Article Abstract:

Marine eutrophication and anthropogenically derived atmospheric nitrogen deposition (AD-N) in the North Atlantic Ocean (NAO) basin and in other marine ecosystems are discussed in relation to a possible to link to expansion of harmful algal bloom. AD-N flux, based on a recent study, accounts for 46-57% of the total anthropogenic, or new, nitrogen flux to the NAO.

Are drifting algal mats conquering the bottom of the Archipelago Sea, SW Finland?

Article Abstract:

Research revealed three types of drifting algal masses found in the northern Baltic Sea, from the shore to a depth of 50 m. These are cover, mat, and mattress; their growth is influenced by appropriate bottom substrate, water transparency and high nutrient loading.
