An expert system for screening potentially invasive alien plants in South African fynbos

Article Abstract:

The development and application of an expert system for effective screening of alien woody plant invaders in South African fynbos in order to reduce the extent of or prevent invasion is discussed. It assesses low invasive risk of woody alien species for cultivation are identified, providing useful information to potential importers of these species. Empirical evidence of varieties introduced in South Africa during 1860s and a comparison of the environment conditions between the home environment of a species and fynbos is used to rate many species.

An analysis is presented on Florida's $8 bil Everglades restoration project, called the Restudy, which will also incorporate plans for agricultural and urban water storage. The author posits that a sensitivity analysis of the project shows that water storage system costs will be influenced by several extraneous factors governing land acquisition, which have yet to be taken into account.
