Antioxidative systems, detoxifying enzymes and thiamine levels in Baltic salmon (Salmo sala) that develop M74

Article Abstract:

Antioxidative systems, detoxifying enzymes and thiamine levels were studied in Baltic Sea Atlantic salmon exhibiting M74 syndrome. Thiamine and carotenoids in salmon roe were identified as important factors in the development of M74. New data linked oxidative stress and M74, and identified the influence of perioxidation and enzyme activities on the pathogenesis of the disease. Identification of family group, age and stage of the disease were essential criteria in the selection of samples.

Physiological and morphological studies of feral perch before and after remediation of a PCB contaminated lake: Jarnsjon

Article Abstract:

Remediation of Lake Jarnsjon in Sweden has revealed possible environmental contaminants other than PCB. Examinations of perch before and after sediment dredging showed physiological anomalies that cannot be accounted for by PCB poisoning alone. These include significant gonad abnormalities in females and nonresponsiveness of perch liver system activity.
