Application of sample selection model in estimating response functions for nitrate percolation

Article Abstract:

A sample selection model was used to estimate nitrate percolation response functions for the Seymour aquifer area of Texas. There is a positive relationship between concentration of nitrate and irrigation because irrigation water contains some nitrate. In Abilene soil, the nitrate concentration is found to be higher, and under minimum tillage, the concentration decreases. Also, the concentration of nitrate percolation is higher in dryland cotton than in irrigated cotton. Thus, design standards are an effective method to control nitrate percolation in the Seymour aquifer region.

The effect of the nitrification inhibitor dicyandiamide on nitrate leaching and ammonia volatilization: a U.K. nitrate sensitive areas perspective

Article Abstract:

A simulated experiment involving application of Diacyandiamide (DCD), a nitrification inhibitor, to 2 types of nitrate-sensitive soil situations in UK shows, the failure of DCD to inhibit nitrification, and increase of ammonia volatilization. Ploughing-in of grasslands and autumn application of inorganic nitrogen fertilizer comprised the experimental soil situations. Leachate and soil analysis show the absence of concomitant DCD-related rise in soil ammonium and decline in soil nitrate, and temporal decline of soil PH. Implications for use of DCD in the UK are discussed.
