The integration of environment into agricultural policies for rural Greece

Article Abstract:

A novel methodology of policy analysis was used to determine the social and environmental implications of different agricultural policies for rural Greece communities. The Common Agricultural Policy of the EU was found inappropriate to the needs of the country. No particular policy instrument was found to be universally applicable although Low External Input Agriculture policies were recommended since they would likely meet least resistance from rural Greek communities.

Social and ecological correlates of rural fires in Greece

Article Abstract:

A study of the information on rural forest fires in Greece between 1978 and 1987 reveals that rapid political and economic changes and cultural and ecological factors contribute to the rampant increase in forest fires in the nation. Researchers and policy makers have reached a consensus to upgrade legislations on safety and security measures to curb the depletion of natural resources through fires caused by nature and arsonists, striving to reclaim land from forests.

Bushfire risk at the urban interface estimated from historical weather records: consequences for the use of prescribed fire in the Sydney region of south-eastern Australia

Article Abstract:

The bushfire potential at the urban interface of northern Sydney contiguous to Ku-ring-gai Chase and Marra Marra National Parks were estimated using the McArthur Forest Fire Danger Index covering the years 1955-1996. The findings suggested that the risk will not improve via prescribed burning in certain areas. The magnitude of the interface affected was dependent on the magnitude of uncontrollable fire. This was due to fuel dynamics and landscape characteristics.
