Assessing impacts of ecosystem engineers on community organization: A general approach illustrated by effects of a high-Andean cushion plant

Article Abstract:

A framework and methodology is presented for assessing the impact of physical ecosystem engineers on three general features of community organizations, which includes species richness and composition, stability richness over time and dominance patterns of species assemblages. This methodology is applied to assess the effects of the cushion plant Azorella monantha on high-Andean plant communities on two mountaintops.

Patch dynamics in a landscape modified by ecosystem engineers

Article Abstract:

A set of models are presented that links the population dynamics of ecosystem engineers (organisms that modify the environment) to the dynamics of the patches they create. The effects of varied factors on the distribution of different patch types are studied.

Type 3 functional response of mice to gypsy moth pupae: Is it stabilizing?

Article Abstract:

Experiments were conducted to determine whether the functional response of white-footed mice to gypsy moth pupae is stabilizing. Results disagree qualitatively with simple models of type 3 functional response.
