Biomass distribution mapping using airborne digital video imagery and spatial statistics in a semi-arid environment

Article Abstract:

Airborne digital video imagery and spatial statistics can be effective in mapping biomass distribution in semi-arid environments. Variograms from remotely sensed data help in investigating spatial structure and pattern of vegetation in relation to the ecosystem. Spatial characteristics of the plant community are determined by analyzing digital images at different pixel sizes with the aid of semi-variograms. Mapping is more accurate when the pixel size is between 0.5 m and 16 m. Experiment at a research site in New Mexico with regard to five major semi-arid plant communities is discussed.

The value of site-specific information and the environment: Technology adoption and pesticide use under uncertainty

Article Abstract:

A model is developed to examine the potential value of remote sensing information to pesticide applications in an option-value framework under uncertainty. Simulations suggest that remote sensing information could decrease pesticide use, but uncertainty and irreversibility are likely to limit technological adoption by farmers.
