Brown bears selectively kill salmon with higher energy content but only in habitats that facilitate choice

Article Abstract:

Predictions of the selective foraging of brown bears feeding on adult sockeye salmon in different habitats was made for quantifying the predation rates on salmon as a function of their in-stream age, determining whether the salmons were killed by the bears. Results show that young high-energy salmons were preferentially killed by the bears at a small shallow stream, whereas low-energy salmons were captured at larger and complex streams.

Influence of marine-derived nutrients from spawning salmon on aquatic insect communities in southeast Alaskan streams

Article Abstract:

An experiment was conducted to investigate the impact of the nutrient transfer system between the anadromous salmon and aquatic insect communities in seven natural stream systems in southeast Alaska. Functional feeding group patterns showed higher abundance and biomass of collector--gatherers and shredders during the post spawning, carcass decomposition period.

Disentangling the selective factors that act on male color in wild guppies

Article Abstract:

A study to disentangle the effects of fish predation in color evolution from the potential effects of physical habitat features and predation by prawns on male guppies is presented. Predatory fishes do impose the strongest selection in the color pattern of male guppies but other factors also play an important role.
