Can a Canadian Iroquois revive the Six Nations' farming tradition?

Article Abstract:

Lehman Gibson, a Canadian Iroquois in the Six Nations Indian Reserve in southern Ontario, Canada, has started cultivating 88 acres of reserve land. He feels that all farmers need to modernize and commit themselves to agriculture. Gibson, who intends to start a laboratory for studying the local herbal medicines, uses 2,000 tons of horse and cow dung to cultivate his land. He has grown beans, onions, corn, strawberries, raspberry, blackberry, potatoes and other vegetables in his experimental farm.

A member of the family

Article Abstract:

The water buffalo, a descendant of the wild 'arni,' is domesticated in rural Vietnam and is used instead of tractors for plowing lands. The socio-economic conditions in Vietnam favor the breeding of swamp buffaloes, or the Shui niu, draft animals well suited for working in the paddy fields. Buffaloes are useful at every stage of their lives, and merit policy changes to encourage their breeding.
