Carbon flux and patterns of land-use/land-cover change in the Selva Lacandona, Mexico

Article Abstract:

Research in Mexico's Selva Lacandona region indicates that land use is linked to carbon fluxes, specifically soil carbon pool losses. A comparison of land use/land cover maps from the 1970s and satellite imagery from the 1990s shows areas that underwent significant conversions lost nearly a quarter of their carbon pools, while areas that experienced low impact levels lost just 3%.

La Morada: a case study on the impact of human pressure on the environment in the Ceja de Selva, northeastern Peru

Article Abstract:

An overview is presented on the Andean village of La Morada, Peru, and the environmental impact caused by human activities such as road construction, selection of crops for growing and the introduction of cattle. Cattle are the most significant factor behind the region's environmental degradation, due to erosion from deforestation and overgrazing.

Patterns of landscape transformation in Colombia, with emphasis in the Andean Region

Article Abstract:

A comparison is presented between landscapes of the Andes and lowland region, focusing on the impact of land use, settlement, and demographic history. The Andean region showed older settlement areas with higher densities and intensive land use than lowland regions.
