Changes in forest cover in a Central Himalayan catchment: inadequacy of assessment based on forest area alone

Article Abstract:

The forest area and above-ground biomass of Central Himalayan catchment was quantified over a period of 16 years to test the hypothesis that forest degradation is possible even when forest area is stable. Continuos deforestation of the area threatens its existing population. Data gathered showed a decline in biomass and forest area. High fragmentation of forest cover was also observed. It was found that forest may degrade without showing perceptible changes in the area.
