Community food web, decomposition and nitrogen mineralisation in a stratified Scots pine forest soil

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that food chains and the indirect impact of soil fauna are important elements of soil nutrient mineralization. Models that do not incorporate these two factors are less likely to make accurate predictions concerning mineralization rates and the contributions of decomposition, as they exclude the trophic interactions between soil fauna and resources.

Catastrophic response of lakes to benthivorous fish introduction

Article Abstract:

The article presents an explanatory model for the negative environmental effects of common carp introduction on lake ecology. Introduction of carp decreases benthic prey population density and increases carp population density; this imbalance in turn produces a higher level of lake turbidity due to a rise in searching and foraging efforts by carp to find prey.

C and N mineralisation in the decomposer food webs of a European forest transect

Article Abstract:

The belowground carbon and nitrogen mineralisation of four European coniferous forest sites with different climate and nitrogen depositional inputs are investigated. A significant influence of food web structure, environmental factors and resource quality exists on soil ecosystem processes.
